Crystal:

See being nervous is usually a sense of not being confident or
prepared and you came out "smoking" on this one.

I'm not sure what the problem with the tables behind the waiter
station is. You have it hidden with a divider wall and it's a
necessary evil in the dining room. I don't see any major flaws with
your current layouts in terms of space flow and organization.

My biggest parting critiques is I would add more lounge seating
upstairs as it is a lounge and many of your perspective views still
have muddy colors for floor and ceiling. I would adjust those few
things before you prepare your final portfolio for job interviews.
Also, maybe now that you have more time, I would practice some hand
sketches to add to your project folder as this seems to be one of
your current weaknesses.

All in all, I give you high marks for this project. If you happen to
be doing job interviews in the Denver area let us know. I'm sure we
are looking for talented Jr. Designers as our company is growing and
we will be moving to a new building soon as we have out grown this
one.

Job well done and give yourself a pat on the back. The lessons you
have learned on this project can be applied to most of life's
problems (persistence and patience and being open to change).

You can thank me by having confidence in yourself and holding out for
a really good starter job. Don't settle for just any job even if you
have to wait a year. This project will allow you to demonstrate your
current design skills and get your foot in the door for almost any
design firm, especially those focused on Restaurant and Hospitality
design.

Wow, I can't beileve it?! Where does the time go? I guess they weren't lying when they said the first day, we will form tight bonds with each other! I think I may cry. I'm going to miss some of the kids so much, we have been through hell trying to get our degrees. Sadley half of us probably won't see each other very much or at all. Well it's been a blast, I've made some awsome friends, and I hope we all succeed.

*Oh my, I hope I got the kitchen right?
*I still have a pick up issue for the waitstaff
*I dont have enough room to put a second wait-station between the
left side of the raised area because of the ramp has to be enclosed
and the door opens to far into the space.

that you won't have enough room to get by to meet the code and you

putting up the wall to cover the view from seeing into the
restrooms.

Ok, so I have sent you my current plan with both floors planned.

The next drawing I am sending to you is an isometric that I did
last night before I played with the kitchen and etc. this morning.
Don't worry the round tables that you are going to see in place of
the square tables is only to help me to see what the planned space
looks like, and to draw the square around them so I draw them
right. I have not done anything with the ceilings yet, I have no
idea what to do with the ceilings, I'm about to start trying
tofigure that out and start planning that and the lighting. Carroll
just passed by my desk,I told her this was being sent to you. This

Ok, sorry it has taken me to the end of the week to get this back, it has been a rough week. I still am having issues with my back of the house, I 'm trying to make it work, but I still have issues, I still need a place for the wait staff to pick up the food, a divider between the bar and the main dining and have to round out the dishwash area. So anyway this is the corrections that I have so far. I'll be posting again shortly after I try and rework the BOH again.

*Well I have changed some seating arrangements and tried to mix those up
*I added a curved partition wall to seperate dining from the bar.
*I worked on the bathroom ADA problem and moved that wall out, I saw what you meant about not being enough turning space.
* I moved the janitor closet from the front it is now between the Men's restroom and the kithcen area.

*Of the natural stone surfaces available these days, none has been time tested the way soapstone has. Questions about the plan:
*How much space between the lines do they need? I tried to keep them spaced like 5' apart.

I added 2'x4' skylights in the center of the three columns in the floor plan, do u think that will be too much light?

* Im going to start my RCP within the next day should I just follow the grid to handle that? Each square following the post is like 451-456 sq. ft. it varies?

*How do I select a theme? I know I need one but I'm not real sure how to get that across

Im going to try and find a sample online but the boards should be in a few days, I went to a flloring company around town and the guy was so nice and helpful, I explained my situation to him and he was glad to help. So far for my bar area I have chosen African porcelain stone for the flooring and I think the other piece I chose was Travat. I have'nt heard of it before so I need to research it somemore. I have pictures to post of lights that I have picked out. My internet connection has been down lately for some reason and I haven't been to get online lately.

Hi guys, sorry I haven't gotton to post lately I just got an email internet on Sunday it has been down since Tuesday. I just got all the emails with all my feedback. Wow Ted, the feedback is pricelaess Mrs. Daughtery is right. However, I had been working via the emails so I would not get behind. I'm going to post shortly. I have cleaned up my drawing layers a bit. I have elevations, and such. I'm about to print your email so that I can start re-doing the areas that you said need work. That makes me happy that you like my logo and my materails. My friend Meghan said the same thing about the materials matching my logo. That was one thing I was trying to accomplish. As far as a theme I'm still thinking, I'm not sure how I want to finsih expressing my ideas.

My material boards are coming out nice. I will take a digital picture of them and post what I have so far. I have also played with the idea of some custom stools. I was thinking of also putting the high tops in the bar area. They would be shown as the regular two tops right?
As far as lighting is concerned, I have began to think about using pendants, chandeilers, etc. Since my ceiling is 16'-8" on the first floor I figure that the ceiling drops should be varied throught the building.
My elevations do not show ceiling drops are lighting. This has me kinda stumped. I will start to post what I have done prior the emails I had just gotton. I'm really excited that Mrs. Daughtery and Carroll are glad are communication is so good. Once again, I am very lucky. That would be awsome to win an award.. Will post again shortly

Hi Ted,
Hopefully you can see some of the changes and ideas I have come up with. If you are unsatisfied with what I have drawn I do have other options that I started that are not posted dealing with the kitchen area. I tried my best to fix the things that were in need of attention. If you need my Auto-Cad drawing I will be glad to send it to you. I need to add my skylights into the plan, I was thinking of maybe three of them, since the columns are roughly 20ft apart I thought about putting them between the three middle columns or some type of automatic louver that lets in the right amount of daylighting. I have no natural light except what is coming through the front doors and windows because I have to wall up where the ramp is. My other focus besides interior components is green design. I'm trying so hard to be as careful as possible while I'm planning to think of these things as I go so I know what I have made green and what I haven't. Our focus counts for I believe 20-50%. My toilets and my urinals are green, and some appliances in the kitchen are as well. How does one show the above vent in the plan? That goes over the back line for ventaliation?

This is the most current plan I have been working on all day and night. I have other ideas saved just incase, however this plan works the best so far.
I need to find out more about fixed seating and raised platform seating. I have changed the water closets and tried to hide the openings in the restrooms, respaced bar and bear seating, the kitchen as well.

As far as flooring goes I have a great deal of samples, though I need to research more since my foci is Green Design/focus/Interior Components.

As far as columns are concerned I am going to try and stick true to the period of the building as much as possible, I'm the late bloomer of my class and I'm just taking ID History.

For the bar I am thinking of using soapstone on the counter tops. I read that this material has been approved by the FDA Administration, the surface will not burn, and is very durable.

This sample is a wall done of the glass beaddazzled Golda. The only thing is this material of course is not seamless, and cannot have too much direct sunlight or it could fade the material over time.

I have picked out some furniture. I think it would be great for interest and look really elegant with back lighting to accent the beads.

Just checked the email, wow I have a lot to chew on.. I posted my last Autocad without reading the comments, I am going to custom design my bars, I have a little sketch of what i have an idea of as well as a bar chair.
I have selected a few finishes, Carroll says the materials I originally picked out were to dark for the space, I told her you told me to be as creative as possible we could always tone it down a bit. Looking at what I had she is right so I'm only posting the new selection of materials, I am going to bring them to class with me so she can give my her thoughts.
God, your so helpful. Thank you, I have shared information with my classmates they are having some of the issues I am having on my project and their mentors arn't barley responding, so not only has your knowledge helped me but others as well. Well, I let myself get behind and now i'm feeling it. My back of the house has been harder than I thought to plan, my brain has been going since about 10 am, well i havent posted all my recent ideas but this one I believe will be the winner, it may need to be tweeked a bit as I go but I'm good after I put the freezeers in then I can place seating. Fire Marshall Day

Well Wed. we had the Fire Marshall come and discuss with us our buildings and answered uncertain questions against the codes. Comparing the codes and making them work with the design is definitly a challenge. The W.T. Grant Building is a very unique building, its actually the most unique that we had a choice of. The experience with the Fire Marshall was really cool, he was a very nice guy, and very happy to answeer any questions that we had. Thats all for now

Welln blogging isn't one of my favorite things to do, but I have to do it. Over the break I did a little work on my Sr. Capstone project. First of all, we had some MAJOR issues with the floor plans, I ordered samples like a crazy woman. I love getting samples in. I found an awsome company called www.MayaRomanoff.com they have extrodinary surfacing materials. I found this wallpaper that is called Beadazzeled, its beautiful. My idea is not to use this material as a wall covering but to custom create panels maybe for my bar, and cover the table tops with this and add glass on top. I think it would great. My mentor was right go all out you can always tone it down, I took those wise words with grace and it helped me to expand my creativity to find intresting materials, and so fourth. So this past week we made logos for our project, created a page format, and creating a schedule for ourselves. Really that part is slightly scary, I don't think any of us realized how precious our time was until we had to plan it ourselves. Or at least thats the way I feel. We are also working on our focus studies, mine happen to be the Interior Components of Design and Green Design. I'm really excited about this whole process. I also got lucky my mentor is so available. I am one of the few fortunate, I will say now, THANKS TED.. So many people in my class haven't heard at all from there mentor's. I don't know what they will do, they are our defense resources to our projects. Well that's enough for now

Well, imagine that, a presentation disaster. It's kinda hard to not be nervous when the odds are against you before you even go in. I know not only myself but others feel the same way. It's not that we mind the constructive criticism but there are appropriate ways to word things so that when someone is presenting you don't feel stupid. Carroll I applaud you and Mrs. Daughtery in the way you guys handle constructive criticism it's not intimidating before you even begin to present to you guys.
Nonetheless, some issues are not as important or as relevantas some may put it: such as clip art for page introductions, if its not right yes, I would be glad to fix it, but the funny thing is "When I thought I was careful when I chose my images",so I wouldn't be deemed for my graphics, once again proved me wrong. I'm not sure what that was all about or had to do with the direct project. Had further notice been takin, and more of a chance to explain besides scan the precedent pics in, yeah I could have but when the books are not yours and someone else is using their book, and not really wanting you to borrow it you do what youhave to and make the best of what you do have, or find, at least that was how I was taught even so if I had put the black in whites in the responce would probably be regarded in the same manner. I can't help the way I feel, i'm not bitter and yeah I have corrections no one is perfect, and were all still learning. Yes, I believe we do need our feelings hurt, and torn down because the real world is not peaches and cream, and niether is a competitve workforce environment such as this, we do need to learn rejection, its all subjective by far.I preach to others not to wear your heart on your shoulders during presentations and cry but its sometimes hard to practice what you preach when you work so hard on something and everything you say is the wrong answer. I guess thats why were in school eh? To learn what people don't like or better yet what pics to put in. jk... Its all based on opinion and some facts, everybody has opinions some are better than others, but sometimes after being torn down so much we do need a little cofidence built back up. I can remember my junior year under the instruction of Mrs. Daughtery, (my favorite teacher ever) seriously, she gave me more confidence than any other teacher had ever given me my entire design education. I'm not sure if it is her method of teaching or the way she comes across when she teaches or gives constructive criticism but it's great. And that is what we need she has the right technique and Carroll does to, she gave me some confidence back to this semster, lord knows last semester was rough. Anyway my point is no matter how much they think I may break they won't keep me down, I may get down for a second but my mom didn't raise me to quit, I never give up! That would be to easy and thats not my style.

Hummm, the semester is already gone. I can't believe it. I present my Sr. Capstone project in the morning. I'm nervous which is exactly what they don't want us to be, but hey how can you not be. I'm not sure why I am, I talk to these people everyday, and have for the last 4 years, why start getting nervous now. Preliminary proposal

The client Mr. Karl Richardson is seeking a proposal for developing a Restaurant/Lounge in Baton Rouge called “Escape”. Mr. Richardson has been in the restaurant business for 28 years and believes that bringing a modern restaurant/lounge would be highly successful. The building would be used for dining, banquets, wine tasting seminars, lounge bar with private dining and occasional receptions. Escape would offer Luncheon Monday thru Friday from 12:00 pm until 2:30 pm. The Upstairs at Escape is open for Dinner would be served Monday thru Friday from 5:30 pm until 9:30 pm; Saturday from 5:30 pm until 11:00 pm.
The W.T. Grant Building that is located in the heart of the “Downtown Development District” and would be the perfect setting for Mr. Richardson’s “Escape” restaurant, this building offers the potential to create an intricate ambiance for the desired modern/contemporary style of his space. The W.T. Grant building is located on 319 Third Street, Baton Rouge, La. The Downtown Development District is a re-planned development that is reconstructing the area and attracting many businesses. The restaurant will also reflect a current trend offering residents and employees a place to interact with work and play within a walking distance from both work and home.
My proposal for Mr. Richardson’s “Escape” restaurant will be a pleasurable experience with a warm and cozy atmosphere. The color scheme will reflect warm colors such. The scope of the project will encompass focus on the interior component design and green design throughout the space. Poor details make for poor design. The meaning of detailing in a design sense is more than the graphic explanation of certain components on a drawing. It means the way materials are put together, the way one part is fastened to another, the way parts and materials are expressed and articulated. It is the designer's job to deal with all of these components by design, by organization, by placement or elimination, and by detailing to create an aesthetic environment. The many detailing possibilities are a real challenge, and give designers a chance to design in a completely personal or creative way.
Furthermore, “Green Design”, will also be a focus in the design of this project. This space will constantly occupy a large number of individuals and I believe that it is important not only to provide a safe environment to everyone in the space but also what is sustainable for the earth and our outside environment. The design project will be fully developed with drawings of plans, sections, elevations, details, perspectives, material selection, and rcp.

This is a picture of the W.T Grant Building on Third Street, Downtown Baton Rouge, La. I plan on using this building for my Sr. Capstone project. My design idea is to convert the interior space of this building to a resturant/lounge. There will be the first floor as the main dining area and the sencond floor a lounge.

In my past experiences throughout the last few years I have taking an interest towards Hospitality design. In junior studio my first introduction to Hospitality design was with Mrs. Daugherty we were assigned to design “The Maritime One Building” downtown as a hotel space with a lounge. As I graduate as a junior designer I plan on focusing all my efforts towards this part of the field. Professionally, I hope to land a job with a multi-design firm that specializes in “Hospitality” design.
My personal take on the Senior Capstone project will be focused towards the design process of planning a restaurant/lounge. I have yet to design a restaurant/lounge as a design student. I believe that by designing this space it will not only enlighten my views on Hospitality design but will also make my portfolio more dynamic. Approaching this concept may be difficult at first since it is a new task, however it will broaden my views on a space I have not been taught how to create. As I take this approach and begin this project I feel my end results will be rewarding and fulfilling in every aspect by showing my personal interest in this particular aspect of the field.
Considering a focus for the restaurant/lounge area I am focusing on the interior component design and green design. I have chosen to focus first on the interior components of the space because poor details make for poor design. The meaning of detailing in a design sense is more than the graphic explanation of certain components on a drawing. It means the way materials are put together, the way one part is fastened to another, the way parts and materials are expressed and articulated. It is the designer's job to deal with all of these components by design, by organization, by placement or elimination, and by detailing to create an aesthetic environment. The many detailing possibilities are a real challenge, and give designers a chance to design in a completely personal or creative way.
Furthermore, “Green Design”, will also be a focus in the design of this project. This space will constantly occupy a large number of individuals and I believe that it is important not only to provide a safe environment to everyone in the space but also what is sustainable for the earth and our outside environment. By focusing on green design I will be able to communicate my understanding of the importance of building a better, more safe environment by using energy cost effective lights, HVAC, etc.
Overall, I am looking forward to carrying out my ideas and designing a well rounded atmosphere. This is a learning experience I am excited about achieving.

In 1920, over three-quarters of a century ago, Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment ushering in the Prohibition Era. In New York, as in every American city, 'speakeasies' mushroomed, but none was more celebrated than "Jack and Charlie's '21'", founded by two collegian cousins from the West Side, Jack Kriendler and CharlieBerns.
It was during this period that '21's famous secret Wine Cellar was built. Its two-ton door was unlocked by placing a meat skewer into a tiny hole in a certain brick. Investigators were further confused by the fact that the cellar was located not in number 21, but number 19, the house next door.

Downtown Baton Rouge had made significant progress in the past ten years under the leadership of Davis Rhorer and the Downtown Development District but still has empty storefronts, vacant buildings and numerous surface parking lots. Plans were already underway to consolidate state agencies in a Capitol Park complex, bringing 3,000 state employees to downtown. Also, plans to expand the Centroplex Arena into a convention center and the Louisiana Arts and Science Center's addition of a planetarium space theater signaled hope for growth and economic progress in downtown.
Plan Baton Rouge is a new way of approaching urban planning and development by identifying public action that will result in widespread, sustained private market reaction. It demonstrates the following principles of New Urbanism: neighborhoods should be diverse in use and population; communities should be designed for pedestrian and transit use as well as the car; cities and towns should be shaped by physically defined and universally accessible public spaces and community institutions; urban places should be framed by architecture and landscape design that celebrate local history, climate, ecology and building practice.

Plan Baton Rouge recommends administrative actions, changes in government procedures and zoning codes, transportation improvements, new legislation and development proposals. Also, the plan recommends that downtown become a special zoning district and that the city should seek state enabling legislation that would allow a more flexible rehabilitation code to be adopted. The plan includes a separate implementation section, specifically requested in the RFQ, which identifies the entities responsible for each of the recommendations, suggests potential funding sources and establishes an implementation schedule.

The citys demographics has been built by many. The wide variety that live downtown range from rich to poor. The history of Baton Rouge is based around people suchas Huey P. Long and so on.
The Old Governor’s Mansion was built in 1929 by the “Kingfish,” Huey P. Long. The Mansion served as Executive Residence from 1930 until 1963 and housed nine of Louisiana’s governors including Earl K. Long and the “singing governor,” Jimmie Davis.
The Old Governor’s Mansion is a historic house museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an elegant venue for special events, and serves as the headquarters for the Foundation for Historical Louisiana. This is the second Governor's Mansion to occupy the site. The first Governor's Mansion, a large frame house built for Baton Rouge businessman Nathan King Knox, served as the official residence of Louisiana Governors from 1887 until 1929, when it was razed and the present Old Governor's Mansion was built. The building cost almost $150,000 to complete, and, at a cost of $22,000 (a princely sum for the time), the Mansion was furnished with the finest damask and velvet drapes, crystal chandeliers, hand-printed French wallpaper, and other fine appointments.

In 1963, a new Mansion was constructed just east of the towering State Capitol building, and in 1964 the old Mansion became the home of the Louisiana Arts and Science Center Museum. The Mansion served as headquarters for the LASC until 1976, when the Museum moved to new quarters in the Old Illinois Central Train Station. In 1978, the Mansion reopened as a historic house museum.The Mansion is four stories high, including a basement and an attic.The Mansion has undergone at least three renovations. The floor plan was modified to provide more linkage between public and private areas of the Mansion in 1937. Air conditioning was added in the 1970’s by the Louisiana Arts and Science Center for both the comfort of Mansion visitors as well as for the maintenance of museum collections. The third and most recent renovation was the major restoration completed in 1999 by the State of Louisiana, substantially returning the house to its original glory. Art Deco colors were extensively researched and replicated as close to the originals as possible. The restored Zuber wallpaper in the State Dining Room is the same wallpaper used in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms in the White House.

The Foundation for Historical Louisiana is proud to work in conjunction with the State of Louisiana to expose all visitors to preservation in progress at the Old Governor’s Mansion. Preservation is an ongoing and constant labor of love.

The Foundation’s mission for the Old Governor’s Mansion is to preserve maintain, protect, and promote the building, collection, and historical integrity of the site; to research and interpret, through educational programs, permanent and changing exhibits, the period from 1930 to 1962, when the building served as home to Louisiana Governor's; and to increase appreciation of Louisiana's social, political, and governmental history.

Thoughts on the News

This may be irrelavent to design but I feel I need to post anyway. My boyfriend and I usually watch the news in the evenings and things around the world constantly seem to be leading to "The End" the end of our days. Our nations and our country are at a massive war, the hurricanes are so powerful and have come the most in one season that I have actually seen this year. After already having two major hurricanes hitting the Gulf Coast we are now preparing again for Hurricane Willma which is supposed to hit sometime this weekend. There are mudslides and hail in California! Who remembers the last time it ever hailed in California, theres been major earthquakes, new cases of disease that we are calling "The Bird Flu", that is said to kill millions just this year. What is real about this is that it is in the Bible. Of course there are those of us who will live in denial and those who chose to see the reality of the phrophacy's from the Bible are slowley becoming real in everyday life. Somehow though everytime this subject comes up people get offended, or they think your nuts. Those people are in denial. We also watched I think it was the History Channel and a preacher was on discussing all these same topics. So what do others believe, if we share our opinions in public then it starts "politics" talk, if you discuss it in the classroom you can be sent to jail. Come on america, we can't have prayer in the classrooms or say the pledge. Did we forget why we say the pledge.
On the same note. I found this to be amusing. I forget which school but there was a man on the news a while back arguing that "The Pledge" shouldn't be said in schoool for this reseaon: because it says "One nation under God". Jay Leno remarks. Well what's the first thing you say in court? Do you sware to tell the whole truth so help you God!??!!! So isn't that a bit contradictive to the person arguing the point. People amuse me.

Senior Project Idea

When I think about what I plan to do my Senior research on I have a few ideas.

Dearman's Resturant ( which used to be a family drug store and small cafe). Dearman's is one of the oldest pharmacy's/cafe's in Baton Rouge. As a child I remember going to Dearman's with my grandparents to get their perscriptions filled. Today Dearman's still stands in Bocage Shopping Center but only as a small cafe with original counter tops and cooking wear. When I go into the cafe' I find myself despretaly wanting to find the owner and convience him to let me restore the interior. This place is so great. The food is wonderful and the shopping center the cafe is located in is a high volume center. It's really a shame to see the interior looking the way it does.
My second idea is on Sherwood Forest where Capital City Grill is located. There is a ton of unused space above the resturant. There are also neighborhoods and apartment complexes and businesses throughout the area. My idea is to take the the above area and gut the spaces turning them into residential loft spaces. I am obsessed with lofts. We did a similar study downtown a few semesters ago at the "Fuqa Building". I think it would be great for the area. The lofts could be leased as needed for temporary people that do not plan to stay long such as we did for the downtown lofts. The building is beautiful, the exterior could be distinguished by there own facades. I believe this would be a great economic up bring to this area.

As far as our last post was concerned, with the influx of individuals and the ever growing Baton Rouge most everyone has mixed emotions, including myself. It definitly makes living in our city almost miserable. When the influx of people first came, it stressed me out so much I would'nt even go to the store unless it was absolutly necessary. That is definitly no way to want to live in the city. People are going to complain regardless of where these people go. No parish wants a abundance of R.V. trailors and campers through there city and neighborhoods. People will riot to fight to keep them out. The type of people that are moving to these parishes are from the worst neighborhoods from NOLA and I can't think of anyone including myself who would want to live or be subjected to those kind of living surroundings especially if you never had to before. The crime is my biggest fear all together.

In the aftermath of Katrina there has been an influx of new residents and business owners into downtown and Baton Rouge as a whole. What effects (positive/negative) do you think the new residents and busniesses will stay in Baton Rouge. What types of incintives or changes to the infastructure might combine busniess to stay in downtown area.

Both positive and negatives could come from these effects of new residents and businesses that are now resideing in Baton Rouge. The influx will build a stronger economy hopefully, however the traffic congestion is terrible. The biggest problem that worries me the most is all the crime that will begin after all the FEMA money runs out. Hopefully the majority of individuals will go back to there city. It makes Baton Rouge a scary place. I have never really been afraid to live in B.R. until all the projects moved here. I hope pur city does not end up trashed the way New Orleans was trashed by the residents there.

Cost Stripping Versus Targeted Spending

Such changes in how space is allocated and used don't come easily to people who have spent their working lives aspiring to a "real" office. Such changes come more naturally to younger employees who have worked this way as students in the recent past. But even with younger employees, companies must decide between two very different paths. One is "cost-stripping," the cut-costs-at-any-cost path, in which firms use hoteling to reduce the corporate space requirements, and the workstations they provide are as basic and stripped down as possible. The alternative approach is "targeted spending."

Employees' desire to work in a distinctive "place," rather than a bland, dull, anonymous area, was satisfied by creating a unique space for the group as a whole. Far ahead of its time, the space was no more expensive than a conventional office and it improved morale and productivity (sales).

Working Smart

Quality companies accept that the world in which they operate constitutes an integrated system. A Porsche without breaks isn't a great car. neither is a workscape that has great furniture but inadequate technology, or one with lots of terrific places for employees to choose to work, but a management philosophy and corporate culture that discourages people from working in the full range of available settings.

Cost and flexibility are a foundation on which to build tomorrow's offices, but by themselves these factors are insufficient. By definition, a foundation by itself is not only unfinished but uninhabitable. To succed in the 21st century, office planning and design need to create spaces that are not just "functional," but welcoming, sustainable and flexible.

Yippie, this is the first engagement ring we looked at. 3 karats, are you serious. We shall see. Anway ever seen a moissanite rock, it shines better than a diamond. No kidding. The jewler held 20,000 dollar diamond up to the moissanite with fiber optics on each one and the moissanite, was way nicer. Moissanite is also unique, it is created from an actual astroid in the sky and crystalizes when it hits the earth. Out with the old and in with the new.

Last Monday I left school, September 19th, just another normal day so I thought, until my mom called me as soon as my boyfriend picked me up from school at 3:00p.m. It's the last call anyone ever wants to recieve. My grandmother was in the hospital and it was time for me to say GOODBYE. My best-friend was leaving this world. See my grandmother and I always had a unique bond. She was my world. We were closer than my mom and I are. However, I am thankful god gave me the chance to say goodbye. She hung on until I arrived. She never regained conciousness but she heard my mother tell her hang on mom Crystal is on her way, and I made it there, I fell apart! I told her I loved her and that it was going to be ok. Not 45 minutes after I left the hospital she passed. How many people ever get the chance to say goodbye. There was a bond, a deep bond that can never be broken. I was the only grandchild that was able to see her before she passed I was the only one that made it. Point proven our bond was special. I take comfort in knowing though that her and my grandfather's wedding anniversery was the next day. How sweet and special. A part of mr feels empty inside. When your grandparents die u realize life is bliss, your childhood is really gone. Another saga in your life begins. She knew I was ok, that I was about to graduate, I finally found true love. I have to stop writing about this for now, I'm choking up.

Relationships to Interior Design

Interior Design is a multi-faced profession in which a structure to achieve a built environment. (Lincoln School of Architecture) Interior Design seeks to understand the relationship between people, activities and places. The variety of Interiors is a rich as society and changes and developments with it. (All-free-info) At one end of the scale are buildings and interiors that can last a generation or more at the other, places which exist on the tide of change, often as usable and vital as fashion itself. (Lincoln School of Architecture) These interior design solutions are functional, enhance-the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically attractive. Interior designs are created in response to and acknowledge the physical location and social context the project. (All-free-info) The best buildings are the best interiors are there is no obvious disparity between the many elements.

Future Directions/ Importance

An effective workplace is never done, as business processes and strategies change so should your workplace. The new concept "hoteling" is such a high demand amoung "offices" is the need to have wideworld communication without actually ever having to be in the "actual offices." Busniesses are now training their employees to become more effective in their jobs. They are allowing employees to change. Their work processes to improve performance. These busniesses are also exploring new options of alternative work settings to give their environments to employees more flexibility in how and when they work.

Looking into the future, the work enviornment may be completely virtual. Striving to use appropriate technology within a structure that will support change is a must. If companies want employees to put their hearts, minds, and skills into their work, the design of the workplace must appropriately reflect and enhance that vision. There are two critical overriding strategies or principles that companies can use to develop and implement the types of productivity improvements that will meet today's needs while providing flexibility to accomodate future changes. The first is to integrate design into strategic planning. The second is to help companies change their cultures by changing their enviornment and work habits. It is also important to integrate and develop comprehensive solutions with multi-disciplinary teams that simutaneously redesign both how and where people work. (ASID Productivity)

The trend toward alternative officing often leads to smaller and less elaborate offices that provide greater flexibility and, in many cases, more technology to accomodate varying needs of different employees. Companies today also, are placing increased emphasis on finding ways to reduce the cost of the office space they are leasing or building. Flexible office design helps companies optimize their space.
Corporations are no longer verticle, they are horizontial. Some companies are considering adopting uniform office space standards for all employees, regardless of title or seniority. Other companies are looking to adopt alternative officing strategjes, such as hoteling.
Technology is so demanding it forces many companies to be flexible due to competitive pressures." Because work patterns are constantly evlving and new technologies emerge, and creating adaptable workspaces to change becomes crucial to reducing operating costs and decreasing the costs and stess whether that means headcount changes or reconfiguring the work environment." A variety of studies have shown that when people work without walls and in close proximity to one another, communication becomes more frequent, managers are more accessibity and productivity rises. Research and case studies show that improved accessibility, proximity and communications help increase productivity, including a clear link between higher density of workstations and higher employee productivity levels.

Ulitmately, flexible interior design helps the entire company adapt to changing customer needs and stay ahead of competitors. So what does all this mean for design community specifically? Working as part of an integrated "productivity team" composed of various client departments and outside the same goals designers can help their clients turn their offices into "tools" that will yeild long-term productivity benefits. *Employees in a small to mid-size business are much more likely to raise the issue of the workplace being functionally efficent enviornment than those in Fortune 500 companies.

*Forty-one percent of those suyveyed strongly agree their current workplace allows them to work as they would like. This is important because this measure has a strong relationship with employee satisfaction.

Tips and Guidelines

*The design of an effective workplace begins with a comprehensive needs analysis to clearly understand the importance of comfort communication, access and functional efficency for a specific client. Following are some of the tips and suggestions that interior design practitioners mentioned during the research survey:

Conduct interviews and focus groups with management and workers to provide insights into thinking about philosophy within an organization. These sessions should be done in confidence to promote free expression of ideas.
Interview workers and worker groups on how they work what their function is, what interactions they have internally as well with customers ans suppliers.
Observe the workplace activities, interactions
Analyze the current workplace layout in terms of what works and what does not. Sometimes the best solution already exists.
Study the physical and the psychological factors that impact the workplace and the people that work within it.
A comforable work enviornment needs to migitate the impact of noise as a distraction. Solutions that addresses noise and acoustic issues may include partial walls, sound dampering tiles, acoustic ceilings, carpeting, etc.
Clutter and disorganization can result in an unconfortable enviornment. Maximize storage spaces so the workplace can be orderly and well organized.
Appearance is vital to a good working atmosphere. You need to pay attention to fabrics, color and finishes and how they make people feel.
Stress the importance of ergonomics in the furniture and equipment used.
Suggest solutions that avoid segregating groups and departments from each other.
Find ways to balance between an enviornment that is open enough to foster communications, yet provides some privacy and protection from noise and distractions.
Solutions need to communication-vocal visual printed, electronic.
Understand the culture of the company. For example, some of the newer business models place more of an emphasis on teaming and may require more group spaces compared to more traditional companies that operate under more hierarachial models.

The American Society of Interior Designers prior research-Recruting and Retaining Qualified Employees-by Design (1999)-demonstrated that workplace design plays a significant role in influencing the decision to take a job or stay in their jobs or make the decision to accept a job. Some of the research findings include:

the workplace enviornment is one of the top three factors influencing the decision to take a job or stay in a job
the ability to be productive and work as they would like is a papamount importance to employees when they evaluate the workplace enviornment.

*The design challenge is to identify and interpret employee values and needs eliminate the negatives that obstruct great work and create a positive great place to work. understanding what employees value verses what they need is fundamental.

"Design is not only the tangible artistic expression. It is a strategic investment that assists in formulating, translating, and expressing an organizations structure and style."

most comments focused on making the workplace a more comforable enviornment; helping them communicate more effectively; providing them access to people, places and things they need; and providing places and things to be more functionally efficent.

The current research reveals that there are four main issues that employees value in the workplace:

the comfort of the workplace, ranging from the physical comfort to the atmosphere or feel of the enviornment

having access to the people places and things necessary to be productive
having a functionally effiecent enviornment
